Ten minutes north of downtown, not on foot

Downtown Arlington sits south of I-30. Mercury Chophouse – Arlington is north of it, in the Entertainment District, on the ninth floor of the Brookhollow Two office tower at 2221 E Lamar Blvd, Suite 910. The distance is about 2.5 to 3 miles, and the drive runs 8 to 10 minutes outside of event traffic. Nobody should plan to walk it.

The straightforward route is north to I-30, then the Ballpark Way exit; Lamar is about a mile up from the interstate, and the tower is on Lamar. Coming from the east side of downtown, Highway 360 north to the Lamar exit works just as well, with the restaurant about a mile west of the interchange. Park in the tower’s garage or its outdoor lot and take the lobby elevator to the top floor. Event traffic is the variable: on Cowboys, Rangers and concert nights, allow extra time and approach on Lamar from the 360 side if I-30 is backed up.

Why people make the drive

Downtown has the restaurants at street level. Mercury has a dining room on the ninth floor of an office tower, with a curved wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that takes in Six Flags Over Texas, Globe Life Field, AT&T Stadium and Hurricane Harbor. The glass faces west and southwest, and sunset lands right in it: about 8:15 PM in May, 7:00 PM in October, 5:25 PM in December.

Inside, it is white tablecloths, crystal chandeliers, tufted booths and a grand piano beside the windows near the bar. Live piano plays on select evenings. Behind the frosted glass door at the back of the room is the Boardroom, whose long table has the same panorama behind it. The cuts that draw people up from downtown

Sauces are $4 each, or $9 for a flight of Rye Whiskey Cream, Demi-Glace and Béarnaise. Lobster Oscar Style is a $20 addition on any cut. Composed entrées carry a $25 split plate fee, and parties of six or more see a 20% gratuity on the check.

Lunch for downtown offices and City Hall

The lunch menu runs Monday through Friday from 11 AM, which puts the ninth floor within a 10-minute drive of a downtown desk. The Club Sandwich is $14, the Marinated Steak Sandwich is $19, the Cobb in a Mold is $16, and the Marinated Steak Stroganoff is $20. The Wagyu London Broil at $65 is the lunch order for a client. Steaks are cheaper at midday: the 6 oz filet is $54 instead of $62.

Parking is simpler than downtown

There are no meters or garages to think about. The Brookhollow Two tower has a free garage and outdoor lot on site, and the elevator from the lobby delivers you to Suite 910. On Cowboys, Rangers and concert nights the district roads are busy, but the tower is on Lamar rather than inside the stadium lots, so leaving is a matter of pulling onto the boulevard. Reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday nights and for any evening that shares the district with a game; book on OpenTable or call 817-381-1157. Weekday service runs from 11 AM, closing at 9 PM Monday through Thursday and 10 PM Friday; Saturday is dinner only from 4 to 10 PM, and Sunday the restaurant is closed.

UTA and College Park Center are on the same trip

The UT Arlington campus and College Park Center at 600 S Center St are also about 2.5 to 3 miles south of the restaurant, on the downtown side of I-30. A graduation, a campus visit or an arena event pairs with dinner on the ninth floor in the same 8 to 10 minute drive.
