In north Arlington, not across town

People on the north side of Arlington have long assumed that a proper steak dinner means a drive to Dallas or Fort Worth. It does not. Mercury Chophouse is on E Lamar Blvd between Highway 360 and the Entertainment District, on the ninth floor of the Brookhollow Two office tower, which puts it inside north Arlington rather than at the far end of it.

The room is the reason it gets talked about: a curved wall of floor-to-ceiling windows over the stadiums, the Six Flags tower and the district hotels, with white tablecloths, leather chairs and a grand piano by the glass. The steaks are the other reason. Both are 8 to 10 minutes from most north Arlington neighborhoods.

It is also independently owned. Jim Ross, who founded it, has lived in Arlington since 1983, served as a police officer here and practices law here, and the restaurant calls itself the first premier steakhouse in the city. For a neighborhood that has watched the district fill with chain restaurants, that matters.

A north Arlington regular's week

The schedule is built for people who live nearby and come back.

The lunch menu is served Monday through Friday from 11 AM and the dinner menu every evening the restaurant is open. If you want the exact switch time for a late lunch, ask when you book. The hours page keeps the current schedule.

The roads you already use

From the 360 side, exit at Lamar and head west about a mile. From I-30, the Ballpark Way exit is about a mile south of the tower. Lamar also runs west past Hurricane Harbor, about half a mile from the restaurant, and Six Flags Over Texas is about a mile away. Parking is in the tower’s garage or its outdoor lot, both at the door. Ride the elevator to the ninth floor and look for the doors marked Suite 910.

Traffic is the one variable. On a Cowboys, Rangers or stadium concert night the district roads fill, but the tower is north of the lots, so a north Arlington guest arriving down Lamar never enters the stadium traffic at all.

What regulars order

A first visit usually means the Center-Cut Filet Mignon, 6 oz at $62 or 8 oz at $74, or the Hand-Cut Ribeye at $75. Repeat visits spread out. The Double-Bone Pork Chop with thyme-onion-bacon jam is $59. The Braised Bone-In Beef Short Rib over whipped potatoes is $82. Chicken Saltimbocca, prosciutto-wrapped with a mushroom Marsala sauce, is $42, and the Tortellini Bolognese is $32 for a lighter night.

At lunch the Chophouse Burger is $17 and the Cobb in a Mold, with applewood-smoked bacon and Gorgonzola, is $16. Through the end of September, Prime Rib Nights bring a 14 oz prime rib dinner to Friday and Saturday for $50 while supplies last. The full menu is online.

Regulars also learn the enhancements. Any steak takes a Gorgonzola Crown for $14, Oscar Style lobster for $20 or a flight of three sauces, Rye Whiskey Cream, Demi-Glace and Béarnaise, for $9. The Mac-n-Cheese takes lobster for $20 more, and the Hand-Cut Fries take truffle oil and Parmesan for $2. The steak toppers page lists them all.

Occasions close to home

When the birthday or the anniversary comes around, the same room does the job without a highway drive. The sunset comes through the west end of the window wall, around 8:15 PM in May and 5:30 PM in November, and live piano plays on select evenings. For a group, the Boardroom seats 8 to 20 at one long table with the windows behind it, or up to 28 semi-private, with a large screen for a watch party. One check is presented for the room, and a 20% gratuity applies to parties of six or more.
