The party where both families meet the ring

An engagement party has a job the wedding does not: it is often the first time the two families sit down together, and it should happen somewhere both sides feel they chose. Mercury Chophouse – Arlington gives them a private room nine floors up, one long table for 8 to 20 where the future in-laws are close enough to talk and far enough apart to relax, and a door that closes on the rest of the restaurant.

For a bigger circle of friends, semi-private seating in the main dining room holds up to 28. The two options are different rooms with the same view, and the events team will place the group in the one that fits the number and the mood.

Timing the toast to the sunset

The Boardroom’s windows face west, and the toast is the moment to schedule around the sun. The restaurant calls the room a perfect place to watch the sunset, and the sunset moves a lot through the year.

February6:05 PM5:45 PM
April7:55 PM7:30 PM
June8:35 PM8:15 PM
September7:35 PM7:15 PM
November5:30 PM5:15 PM

Seat the party about an hour before sunset and raise the glasses twenty minutes before it. After dark, the stadium lights and the district take over, which is its own kind of backdrop for the photographs. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and opens at 4 PM on Saturday, so a Saturday party is an evening one by definition.

What to pour for the toast

The cocktail list has several drinks that were built for exactly this moment. The MCA French 75 is $17. The Ladies First, at $16, is Wheatley vodka, lemon, berry coulis and rosé bubbles. The Bubbly Husband is $17, which somebody at the table will find funny. The Strawberry Negroni at $17 and the Arlington Cosmopolitan at $17, made with St George citrus vodka and Ferrand dry curaçao, round out a list that the cocktails page covers in full.

For a table that would rather toast with wine, the list runs from a $77 international red to Opus One 2022 at $686, and the events team can suggest bottles at whatever level the host names. Ask on the inquiry form if you want a signature drink for the couple; bar arrangements for the room are part of the tailored proposal.

Dinner after the announcement

Private dining menus are written for each group, and an engagement dinner usually gets a shared starter, a choice of three entrées and dessert. From the dinner menu, the Filet Mignon Cigars at $17 and the Chophouse Calamari at $17 make an easy shared first course; the 6 oz Center-Cut Filet Mignon at $62, Cedar Plank Grilled Salmon at $48 and Chicken Saltimbocca at $42 cover three appetites; and the Chocolate Torte at $15, marked gluten free, or the Key Lime Pie at $16 close it. Composed entrées carry a $25 split plate fee, which matters only if two guests want to share one steak.

Allergies go to the kitchen before the night, not at the table. Collect them with the RSVPs and put them on the form. Warm bread with garlic butter comes out first, the piano plays in the main room on select evenings, and the events team can tell you the sunset time for the date you have in mind.

Before and after the engagement party

Couples who have not yet asked the question sometimes use this room for that too; the proposal dinner page covers the two-person version at a window table. And once the date is set, the same Boardroom hosts the rehearsal dinner for the same twenty people, which means the families arrive at the wedding weekend already knowing the way to the ninth floor. Send the date, headcount and a backup date through the event inquiry form, and expect availability and a written proposal within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can we show a slideshow of the couple at the engagement party?

Yes, in the Boardroom, which has a fully integrated AV system with a large screen at one end of the table. Say on the inquiry form that you plan to show photos or a video and how you will connect, so the setup is confirmed in the proposal. Ask whether a screen can be arranged if you book the semi-private area instead.

Is an engagement party at the restaurant a cocktail party or a seated dinner?

A seated dinner. The Boardroom is one long table for up to 20, and the semi-private option for up to 28 is also seated. There is no standing reception space. Hosts who want an hour of cocktails first can ask for a drinks course before the food, timed to the sunset.

Can the bride's parents and the groom's parents split the cost of the engagement dinner?

Any Boardroom group receives one check, and parties of 12 or more in the main dining room do as well. One host pays, and the families settle between themselves. The 20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more is already on the check, so there is nothing to work out at the table.

Can we decorate the Boardroom for an engagement party?

The website does not publish a décor policy. Small florals and place cards are the usual request, and anything larger should go on the inquiry form so the events team can answer in the proposal. The room already has white linens, the view and low lighting, which do most of the work.

How far ahead do engagement parties need to be booked in Arlington?

There is no published cutoff, so this is a recommendation: three to four weeks for a weeknight, and longer for a Friday or Saturday in spring, when the room also carries rehearsal dinners and graduation dinners. Inquiries are answered within 48 hours, and a backup date on the form helps.
