Three decisions before you book

A dinner proposal comes down to three choices: where in the room you sit, what time the evening starts, and who else knows. Get those right and the rest is dinner. Mercury sits on the ninth floor of the Brookhollow Two tower at 2221 E Lamar Blvd, and the room was built around a curved wall of floor-to-ceiling glass facing west over the district, which settles the first decision for most people before they arrive. The other two take a phone call.

Where: the window, a booth or a room of your own

The window two-tops face the sunset and, later, the lights of Six Flags, Globe Life Field and AT&T Stadium. They are the natural choice and the one most people request. They are also requested, not guaranteed, so book early and ask for one by phone rather than relying on a note in the online widget.

The tufted booths along the banquette wall are a step out of the room’s sightlines. If you would rather not have the next table watching, say so when you book and ask for a booth.

The Boardroom is the private option: a room behind a frosted glass door with its own window view, seating 8 to 20 at one long table. It is booked through the event inquiry form, a food and beverage minimum applies, and replies take up to 48 hours. When: time the table to the sunset

The light does the work if you let it. Book about 45 minutes before sunset so you are seated with a drink as it goes down.

Two calendar notes. Saturday service starts at 4 PM, so a November or December Saturday proposal can catch the sunset at the first seating. And the restaurant is closed on Sundays, so if the date you had in mind is a Sunday, Saturday is the closest night.

What to ask for when you book

Restaurants get this request more often than you would think, and the host team will tell you plainly what it can do. Things worth asking about when you call 817-381-1157:

• Holding the ring and bringing it out with a specific dessert, such as the Crème Brûlée ($15) or the Chocolate Torte ($15)
• Timing dessert to a moment you choose, or holding it until you signal your server
• A quiet word with the manager on arrival so the floor knows what is coming
• Whether someone can take a photo at the window once the answer is in
• A second table nearby for family who want to be in the room without being at the table

After the yes

The cocktail list has three drinks with bubbles in them: the Bubbly Husband ($17), the MCA French 75 ($17) and Ladies First ($16), which finishes with rosé bubbles over berry coulis. Ask your server about sparkling wine by the bottle. For a toast that lasts, the port list runs from $12 to the Kopke 30-year White Tawny at $48, and Louis XIII by Rémy Martin is $150 for a half-ounce pour.

Then the photos. The window wall at dusk, with the district lit below, is the shot, and on select evenings the grand piano by the bar is playing behind it. If both families are waiting, The Boardroom is a few steps away.

Practical matters

Dress is business casual. A jacket is not required, but the room suits one, and a jacket pocket is the safest place for a ring box through dinner. Park free in the tower’s garage or outdoor lot and take the elevator to Suite 910. Check the district calendar before you pick a date: Rangers home games, Cowboys games and stadium concerts fill the roads around Lamar in the early evening, and a quieter night makes for an easier arrival. Hours are 11 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, 11 AM to 10 PM Friday, 4 to 10 PM Saturday, and closed Sunday.
