Birthdays come in sizes

A birthday dinner for two and a birthday dinner for sixteen are different bookings, and the restaurant treats them differently. The room is the same either way: the ninth floor of the Brookhollow Two tower on E Lamar Blvd, a curved wall of windows over Six Flags, Globe Life Field and AT&T Stadium, chandeliers, white tablecloths, and a grand piano by the glass on select evenings. What changes is where you sit, how the check works and how far ahead you need to call.

Two at the window

For a birthday for two, the ask is simple: a window table or a booth, timed to the sunset if you can. In September sunset is about 7:35 PM; in January it is about 5:40 PM. Window tables are requested, not guaranteed. The romantic restaurants page covers the two-top version of the evening in detail, including the after-dinner list, which is where a birthday for two tends to end.

Six to eleven at a long table

Most birthday dinners land here: parents, siblings, a few friends. In the main dining room a party of six or more pays a 20% gratuity, and from ten guests up a food and beverage minimum applies. Reserve by phone for anything over six so the host can place you together, and ask for the window side of the room. On a Friday or Saturday night, or a night when the Rangers are home or there is a concert at AT&T Stadium, book as early as you can. The large party dining page has the full policy.

Twelve to twenty behind the frosted door

At twelve guests you are in one-check territory, and that is the point at which The Boardroom starts to make sense. It seats 8 to 20 at a single long table behind a frosted glass door lettered Mercury Board Room, with its own window view of the district and a fully integrated AV system with a large screen. Bring a slideshow of the birthday person through the decades and ask what format the system takes. Menus can be tailored, a food and beverage minimum is quoted in the written proposal, and the room is requested through the event inquiry form, answered within 48 hours. Semi-private seating takes the count to 28. The private birthday party room page goes deeper on the room itself.

What a birthday table orders

Start the table with the Land & Sea Sampler ($26 per person) or a couple of orders of Savory Meatballs ($18) and Chophouse Calamari ($17) down the middle. The 27 oz Wagyu Long Bone Ribeye ($210) is the centerpiece steak for a table that wants something to pass around; the Bone-In Ribeye ($90) and the Braised Bone-In Beef Short Rib ($82) are the two most generous single plates. Sides are sized to share: Whipped Potatoes ($14), Brussels Sprouts ($17), au Gratin Potatoes ($16), Mac-n-Cheese ($15).

For the birthday course, the kitchen has Italian Cream Cake ($17), Strawberry Cake ($17), New York Cheesecake ($15), the Brownie with vanilla ice cream ($15) and two gluten-free choices, Crème Brûlée ($15) and Chocolate Torte ($15). A round of shaken ice cream cocktails, Grasshopper ($17) or Brandy Alexander ($18), does the job for a table that would rather drink dessert.

The details people ask about

Bringing your own cake: the policy is not published, so ask when you book and the host will tell you what is possible. A complimentary birthday touch: guests have mentioned them, but they are at management’s discretion and should not be expected. Decorations on the table: ask; the answer depends on the night and the table. Splitting the check: published policy is one check for parties of twelve or more and for any group in The Boardroom; smaller tables should ask their server.

If you cannot be at the dinner, an eGift card through Toast covers it, and the balance can be checked at the same site. Weekday birthdays have a lunch option too: Monday through Friday from 11 AM, with the Chophouse Burger at $17, Chicken Fried Steak at $24 and a 6 oz Center-Cut Filet at $54. Sunday birthdays move to Saturday, when the room opens at 4 PM.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my own birthday cake to Mercury Chophouse?

The outside-cake policy is not published, so call 817-381-1157 when you book and ask. The kitchen's own list covers most tastes: Italian Cream Cake and Strawberry Cake at $17, New York Cheesecake, a Brownie with vanilla ice cream, and gluten-free Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Torte at $15 each.

Does Mercury Chophouse give a free dessert on your birthday?

Guests have written about birthday touches, but they are at the manager's discretion and are not a published policy. Mention the birthday when you reserve so the team knows, and order dessert on its own merits rather than counting on a complimentary one.

What is the largest birthday party Mercury Chophouse can seat?

The Boardroom seats 8 to 20 at one long table, and semi-private seating extends to 28. Both are booked through the event inquiry form, which is answered within 48 hours. For a party larger than 28, describe it on the form and the team will say what the main dining room can do.

How far ahead should I book a birthday dinner for twelve?

As soon as the date is set. Twelve guests means one check and, in the main room, a food and beverage minimum; in The Boardroom it means a written proposal. Friday and Saturday nights and game or concert nights fill first, so a week's notice is the minimum and more is better.

Can we split the check at a birthday dinner?

For groups of twelve or more in general dining and for any group in The Boardroom, only one check is presented, so plan for one person to settle it or collect ahead of time. For smaller tables the policy is not published; ask your server when you order.

Is there a way to do a birthday at lunch instead of dinner?

Yes, Monday through Friday from 11 AM. The lunch menu carries the same steaks at lower prices, a 6 oz filet at $54 and a Hand-Cut Ribeye at $67, plus the Chophouse Burger at $17. The daytime view takes in the Six Flags tower and Globe Life Field. Saturday is dinner only from 4 PM.
