What a client dinner needs

Three things, in order: a room where two people can hear each other, something to talk about besides the deal, and a check that arrives without a scene. Mercury Chophouse – Arlington was built around the first two and has written policies for the third.

The dining room is white tablecloths, leather chairs and tufted booths under crystal chandeliers, with the TVs kept to the bar and the Boardroom. The something-to-talk-about is the curved window wall on the ninth floor: AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field and the Six Flags tower are in it, and sunset lands in it around 7:35 PM in September and 5:25 PM in December. Out-of-town clients tend to do the talking for the first ten minutes. A grand piano stands by the windows near the bar and plays on select evenings, at a volume that leaves the table to itself.

Handling the check

For a table of 12 or more in the dining room, and for any party in the Boardroom, one check is presented. No split checks. That is written policy, and it removes the moment where a client reaches for a wallet. A 20% gratuity is added for parties of six or more, and composed entrées carry a $25 split-plate fee.

For a smaller table, let the host stand know when you reserve that the check should come to you, and tell your server again at the start of the meal. If the evening calls for a follow-up, eGift cards are sold through Toast and can be sent the next morning; see the corporate gift card page.

The Boardroom for a working dinner

Behind a frosted glass door lettered Mercury Board Room is a private room with one long table for 8 to 20, a fully integrated AV system with a large screen, and the same panoramic view as the dining room. It suits a pitch with slides, a deal dinner where the numbers need to stay in the room, or a working lunch on a weekday. Semi-private seating extends to 28 when the group outgrows the table.

Parties of 10 or more meet a food and beverage minimum, which is quoted in the written proposal along with menu options; private menus can be tailored. Requests go through the event inquiry form and are answered within 48 hours, so send it the week you set the meeting. The executive dinner page covers the room in more detail.

Arrival and parking

The restaurant is in Suite 910, the top floor of the Brookhollow Two office tower at 2221 E Lamar Blvd. Guests park free in the tower’s garage or its outdoor lot and take the elevator up; the entrance doors on the ninth floor are lettered with the name so nobody wanders the hallway. The Highway 360 business corridor is about a mile east, I-30 about a mile south. From downtown Dallas the drive is about 25 minutes, from downtown Fort Worth about 22, from Las Colinas about 18, from DFW Airport 15 to 20.

Weeknights the restaurant closes at 9 PM, so a 6:30 PM reservation is the latest comfortable start Monday through Thursday. Friday runs to 10 PM. Sunday it is closed. For a client flying in, weekday lunch from 11 AM is the other option; the business lunch page covers it.

Briefing your guest on the dress code

Clients appreciate being told. The code is business casual: tailored trousers or unripped jeans, collared shirts and sports coats encouraged, no graphic T-shirts, baseball caps, hoodies, athletic wear or flip-flops. Jacket and tie are not required. Hats, including cowboy hats, are welcome but come off at the table. Management reserves the right to refuse service for non-adherence, which is a sentence you would rather your guest not hear at the door. The full text is on the dress code page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I arrange for the check to come to me without the client seeing it?

Yes. Mention it when you reserve and again to your server before the first course. For groups of 12 or more in the dining room and any group in the Boardroom, a single check is policy in any case. Gratuity of 20% is added at six guests or more, so the total needs no arithmetic at the table.

Is the dining room quiet enough to talk business?

It is a white-tablecloth dining room with the TVs kept at the bar and inside the Boardroom, and the district noise stays nine floors down. Ask for a table away from the bar when you book. For anything confidential, the Boardroom's frosted glass door closes on a table of 8 to 20.

Do I need the Boardroom for a party of four?

No. The Boardroom is sized for 8 to 20 at one long table. A party of four belongs in the dining room; request a booth or a window table when you book. The room is worth considering at 8 or more, or whenever you need the AV screen for a presentation.

Can I set the menu ahead of time for a client group?

For a Boardroom or semi-private group, yes: private dining menus can be tailored to the party and are quoted with the proposal, along with the food and beverage minimum for 10 or more. For a smaller dining-room table, guests order from the regular menu, which is online.

What time should I book a weeknight client dinner?

Between 6 and 6:30 PM. The restaurant closes at 9 PM Monday through Thursday, and a 6:30 PM start leaves time for three courses and a cognac without watching the clock. Friday runs to 10 PM. On a weeknight in fall or winter, that window also lands on the sunset.

Do you do client lunches as well?

Yes, Monday through Friday from 11 AM. The lunch menu includes a Center-Cut Filet Mignon at $54 for 6 oz, a Wagyu London Broil at $65 and salads and sandwiches from $14, and the Boardroom is available for a lunch meeting. See the business lunch page for timing.
