Why the room is quiet

Sound in a restaurant comes from hard surfaces and crowded tables. The main dining room here has neither. Tablecloths and linen napkins soften the tabletops, the chairs are leather, the booths are tufted upholstery, and the room runs along a curved window wall nine floors above the street, where there is no traffic noise to compete with. The bar has TVs, but the bar is at one end of the room, and the tables are spaced so that the next conversation is not yours.

Music is live piano on select evenings from a grand piano by the windows, played at a level meant to sit under speech. On a Tuesday at 6 PM you can hear the person across the table without leaning in. The room at dusk, with the lights coming up below the windows, is shown in the gallery.

Quietest times, honestly ranked

The honest version: this is a busy steakhouse on a Saturday night, and a Rangers weeknight with first pitch around 7 PM fills the early seating. If the conversation is the whole point of the evening, choose a Monday to Thursday and reserve for 5:30 or 6 PM. The game day page shows which nights the district is busiest.

Where to sit

Ask for a booth on the banquette wall if you want the most enclosed seat; the tufted backs block sound from behind. Ask for a window two-top if you want the view and do not mind being nearer the piano. Avoid the bar end if TVs or the piano would distract. Say all of this when you book on OpenTable or call 817-381-1157; seating requests are noted, not guaranteed. For a table of two, make the booth request at booking rather than at the door. Window two-tops face west, so on a July evening the sun is in your eyes until about 8:35 PM; a booth avoids that as well.

When the conversation has to be private

For a conversation that cannot be overheard, a difficult family talk, a job offer, a negotiation, the Boardroom is the answer. It is a separate room behind a frosted glass door with one long table for 8 to 20 people, or semi-private space for up to 28, with its own windows over the district. It takes one check and a food and beverage minimum quoted with the proposal. Request it through the event inquiry form; replies come within 48 hours. The room is set for parties of 8 or more, so for a private conversation between two people, the booth is the tool.

What to order when talking is the point

Food that does not demand attention. The Signature Wagyu & Black Truffle Ravioli at $34 is a starter you can eat slowly. The Center-Cut Filet Mignon, 6 oz at $62, is a steak that needs no carving. The Chicken Saltimbocca at $42 and the Seared Sea Bass at $57 are fork dishes. Shareable sides such as Creamed Spinach at $16 and Whipped Potatoes at $14 sit in the middle. Coffee at $4 and a Crème Brûlée at $15 extend the evening without a second course, and a port from $12 does the same for a longer one. Steaks take a $4 sauce if you want one: Béarnaise, demi-glace, chimichurri or a rye whiskey cream, or a flight of three for $9.

Compared with the district

Most restaurants inside the Entertainment District core are built for volume before and after events, and they sound like it. Mercury sits just north of the stadium lots on E Lamar Blvd, in an office tower, and the room was set up for the opposite purpose. The distances tell the story: the Loews Arlington Hotel and the convention center are about 0.6 mile away and AT&T Stadium about 1.5 miles, close enough for a pre-game dinner and far enough that the crowd does not wash through the room.
