Twelve minutes from Grand Prairie

Grand Prairie and Arlington share a border, and Mercury Chophouse sits on the Arlington side of it, about 6 miles from the center of Grand Prairie. Outside of event traffic the drive is about 12 minutes.

Why cross the city line for dinner

Because nothing this close to Grand Prairie looks like this. Mercury has the top floor of the Brookhollow Two office tower, and its dining room is wrapped in a curved wall of floor-to-ceiling windows over the Entertainment District: AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field, the Six Flags tower, the hotels. Sunset comes through the west end of the glass, and a grand piano stands beside the windows near the bar.

The alternative for a night like this used to be the drive into Dallas, and downtown Dallas is about 20 miles from Mercury’s door. For a Grand Prairie couple, 12 minutes in one direction beats 30 in the other, and the view at the end of the short drive is one Dallas cannot offer: the stadiums lit up below you. Game nights, from the east

Grand Prairie drivers approach the district from the east on I-30 or 360, which means you reach Mercury before you reach the stadium traffic. The tower sits just north of the district and off the main lots, so parking is on site and leaving after dinner means Lamar back to the highway rather than a stadium exit.

Rangers weeknight first pitches are usually around 7 PM, and Globe Life Field is about a mile from the restaurant. Cowboys home games are mostly on Sundays, when Mercury is closed, so the dinners that work are Thursday, Monday and Saturday games and the Friday and Saturday nights before a Sunday game. What to order on a first visit

Start with the Land & Sea Sampler at $26 per person, which puts Chophouse calamari, a filet mignon cigar, a crab cake and the MCA shrimp cocktail on one plate. Then a Bone-In Ribeye with Dijon butter at $90 or the 8 oz Center-Cut Filet Mignon at $74; the Seared Sea Bass with corn risotto at $57 is the non-steak order most tables land on.

Sides are shareable: Corn Risotto $16, Brussels Sprouts with bacon $17, Whipped Potatoes $14. The Cherry & Pecan Bread Pudding with vanilla ice cream is $16. From the bar, the Hibiscus Ranchwater is $17 and the Margarita on the Rock, made with Wild Common blanco, is $20. Parties of six or more carry a 20% gratuity.

If the table wants to see the whole kitchen at once, the Signature Wagyu & Black Truffle Ravioli at $34 is the starter the restaurant puts its name on: wild mushroom risotto, Burgundy and a balsamic demi-glace. For a longer night there is a Crème Brûlée at $15, gluten free, and a Keoke coffee with Ferrand 1840 Cognac at $16 to finish. Warm bread with garlic butter arrives at every table before any of it. The Boardroom, behind a frosted glass door off the dining room, seats 8 to 20 at a single long table with windows behind it, and semi-private arrangements go up to 28.
